Kids martial arts benefits a child greatly. Different styles such as Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Wrestling will help kids to gain better self esteem as well as discipline. The misconception out there is that martial arts might make a child more violent, but that’s simply not true. Martial arts can actually teach better self-control and how to make friends. Parents with children, who tend to be hyperactive, credit martial arts programs with giving their kids the self-discipline and control that they need. Let’s explain how it works.
Discipline in Kids Martial Arts
One area in which kids martial arts improves a child’s life is with discipline. At Spartan Mixed Martial Arts, classes start with a lineup and bow in. This helps instill the concept of discipline right off the bat. It’s a reminder to them that whatever they were doing up to this point has to stop, and the serious attitude must begin. This is an important concept for a child to learn early. A child needs to learn to balance out work and play. This will carry over in school and at home. So, the basic structure that a martial arts class presents to a kid is very valuable. The kid learns play time has just ended, it’s time to do work.
Another key factor in a child developing discipline is the idea for the child to learn what’s right and wrong. Teaching a child the benefits of doing one action and the pitfalls of another can go a long way. What is best is to teach kids how to act and behave, instead of just ordering them as they were in the military. By having this approach, a kid will start to do the right thing on their own. Opposed to just doing what they are told.
Athleticism: Making Kids More Active
Another key aspect to a good kids martial arts program is athleticism. Nowadays, there is so much to do between the computer and the video game console. Kids who aren’t active in other sports have very few reasons to stay active. As a result, kids will be less in shape. A good kids martial arts class should be designed to turn kids into better athletes. This is done in many ways. There are many fun drills and exercises that not only get kids in shape, but keep them engaged and having fun. This helps in many ways. First, it helps kids become better martial artists. Second, their overall health greatly improves. Third, the physical abilities they develop in martial arts can help them become more successful in other sports.
Confidence and Self-Esteem in Kids Martial Arts
The truth is the confidence that kids gain on the mats carries over to all areas of life. When a child starts martial arts training, they learn something important. This is to become a better version of themselves.
Unlike team sports, a martial arts student does not measure him or herself based on the ending score on a scoreboard. What the other individuals in the class do have no affect on any particular student. The student is being evaluated 100 percent on their own successes or faults. It falls completely on the individual to get to next belt. Therefore, the student becomes more in touch with themselves. They learn to better themselves and not to rely on others. This is where self-confidence and self-esteem for kids starts. They learn to overcome obstacles and move forward. This skill is easily carried over into all other areas. Furthermore, because a kid learns this at a young age, it has a better chance to stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Self Defense: Kids Need to be Safe
Self defense is very important to any person. Nowadays, self defense for kids is more important than ever. The bullying epidemic is definitely on the rise. There are more situations where a child might have the need to defend themselves. Our school has a specific approach for this. We teach kids Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling. These arts are highly effective in three important areas, the ground, stand-up striking, and takedowns.
Since these styles are highly effective for adults, why not teach them in a kids martial arts program? Being that we do teach kids these intense styles, the greatest thing is that our students never hurt anyone. This is because they know a high range of techniques, and don’t have to hurt anyone unnecessarily. This is mostly due to the fact that they are proficient in the grappling arts. They are taught to just control someone instead of hurting them. However, the main reason why our kids don’t have to use these techniques, has to due with the confidence they have developed. We coach kids the right way, building their confidence as well as their martial arts abilities. A confident kid learns to keep their composure and walk away regardless of what the other person is saying. Also, being more confident discourages them from getting bullied in the first place.
Respect goes a long way in a child’s life. In martial arts, respect is instilled from day one. The moment they bow, they start to grasp the idea of respect. Kids learn respect by becoming respectful. Being respectful of the class, the instructor, the mat, the rules, the belt system, and fellow classmates all help a child to develop this quality. This is important because in order to get respect, you first give respect. The child will one day value the idea of others respecting him or her. By living a life where they showed the utmost respect, they will get it back.
