Improving your skill in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be very challenging. So there are a few approaches you can have to get the most out of your training. The first thing you’ll need to do is to be consistent. Training BJJ twice a week for two years consistently is better than training it three times a week, missing weeks or months here and there. This is important because you will retain your knowledge better and build upon the skills you have already developed. Also, it’s important to give yourself a rest in between training sessions. A day or so is good. This way you can go into each session fresh and avoid injuries.
Improving in BJJ = Being a Smart Student
Next, you’ll need to commit yourself to learn and be determined. Pay close attention to the details the instructor gives you. Also, take the advice of the higher ranks in class. They have been where you are before. Determination comes in when you get frustrated or don’t do so well. You’ll need to have the continuous desire to keep coming back and to keep moving forward.
Another good tip for improving is to not take plateaus too seriously. Every black belt has been through this many times before, a lot more than you have. So just remember it’s all part of the learning process.
Also, you will be improving your skill much quicker if you put more time into drilling. A common mistake is to think once you have performed the move correctly, you have the technique ready to use. This is a huge mistake. You should be drilling the moves you already know many times. The more you practice them, the better you get.
Finally, set a goal and never give up. Set a goal for years down the line. If your goal is to get your black belt, give yourself plenty of time. Do whatever it takes for you to stay on the path and you’ll make it there.
