In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, there are many abilities that can help a practitioner get better. Of course, having strength, speed, coordination, and many others are good.  However, people overlook perhaps the most important quality to have: dedication.

Why is dedication so important? Why is it more important than the rest? It’s simple, if you are dedicated, you are consistent. Being consistent means a student will learn and progress faster than a student who isn’t as consistent.

Dedication = Consistency

Consistency is critical for progression in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Mat time is crucial for a student’s development. On the mat, a student figures out what works or what needs to be corrected. Also, they learn the intricate details of leverage the more classes they take. Leverage gives the smaller or weaker practitioner the ability to overcome those who are bigger and stronger. Therefore, the consistent student becomes more proficient over students who are faster and stronger but not as consistent.

The more consistent student develops their own style quicker. Having your own style with techniques that work effectively is critical for development in BJJ. This is because every student has a different body type along with different physical attributes. After a while on the mats, the student starts to notice certain techniques that work for them more often than others. They begin to develop their own style which is the key to getting to a higher skill level.

So, a student who may not be the best athlete or best physically gifted, needs to remember to keep showing up to train. If that student has good dedication, they will most likely move ahead faster than the rest.
